Reversi

What is Reversi?

Reversi is a strategy game on an 8×8 board with pieces that are black on one side and white on the other. Each piece must be placed so that it traps one or more enemy pieces in a line, which then flip over and change colour. You can learn the rules in a minute, but the game can turn around until the very last move. Play against the computer or with two players on the same screen.

How to play

• Black starts; against the computer you are Black.
• The dots on the board show where you can place a piece: tap one of those squares.
• Your piece must trap, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, a line of enemy pieces between it and another of your pieces: all those pieces flip to your colour.
• If you have no possible move you pass; the game ends when neither player can move.
• Whoever has more pieces of their colour on the board wins.
• Points against the computer: win 100 plus 2 for each piece of margin; draw 50; loss 1 for each of your pieces. No points are counted with two players.

Tips

• Corners are the best squares: a piece in a corner can never be flipped.
• Avoid the squares next to the corners while the corner is empty: they hand the corner to your opponent.
• Early on, having lots of possible moves matters more than having lots of pieces.
